The Tiezzi estate is comprised of four holdings: “Il Cerrino,” “Cigaleta,” “San Carlo,” and “Soccorso,” with a combined total surface of around 10 hectares located in diverse zones of the Montalcino territory, of which 5.5 are cultivated to Sangiovese (Brunello) and 3 to olives. The Cigaleta and Cerrino vineyards are approximately 3 kilometres from Montalcino, to the north-east, along the state road of Brunello in the direction of Siena at a height of 350 meters above sea level. The heart and jewel of the estate is the historic vineyard Soccorso which is also where the headquarters and cellar are located. Situated a few steps from the historic centre of Montalcino, adjacent to the wall of the 1300’s and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso church, the Soccorso vineyard is approximately 500 metres above sea level and directionly south-west.
Only 1700 cases total of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino combined are produced each year at this tiny estate. After working with some of Montalcino and Montepulciano’s most renowned estates for decades as the director of agronomy and winemaking, Enzo Tiezzi decided to take on the challenge of his own estate. He managed to buy 4 separate and small properties, all immediately outside the ancient walls of the actual village of Montalcino, finally bottling at this tiny estate for the first time in 1989. Since then, extensive renovations and improvements have taken place, and the size of the estate has increased to a total of 10 hectares with 5.5 hectares of vines. Dedicated to preserving the tradition of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, Tiezzi strives to make his wines in the most traditional way, with long macerations in the upright, large casks known locally as “tini” and ageing only in the giant Slavonian-oak casks known as “botte,” resulting in a style with ripe and silky Sangiovese that displays pure fruit and rich, rustic, earthy qualities. He has just added a new single-vineyard bottling from the Madonna del Soccorso vineyard, a plot of high-altitude old-vines located just beneath the historic village of Montalcino. This bottling bears the original label associated with this vineyard, which some believe to be the first label to ever bear the term “Brunello.” The vineyard, located just below the town of Montalcino, sits at a height of 500 meters above sea level, an exceptional altitude for Montalcino, resulting in gorgeous aromatics.
Tiezzi is not certified organic by choice, even though he has always believed in low impact farming and has taken a non-interventionist approach when it comes to winemaking. Fungal diseases are treated with traditional products: Copper and Sulphur. Every detail in the vineyards and winery is personally followed by Doctor Tiezzi, a trained oenologist, and his wines are produced in the most traditional of ways: native yeasts, extended fermentation of the grapes in wooden vats without temperature control, twice daily pumpovers, and manual punchdowns. All wines are aged in Slavonian oak barrels of 10-40 hl capacity.
