You can count Edi Kante among Friuli’s cohort of idiosyncratic and extraordinarily talented (yet under the radar) winemakers. His vineyards are on the Carso, the limestone plateau running between Trieste and Slovenia. While he focuses on whites (what the region is known for), when conditions permit, he produces a tiny amount of Pinot Nero from high elevation vineyards (900) planted to pure karst (limestone). The wine is aged for 3 years in French oak (10% new) followed by 2 years in bottle prior to release, yielding a transcendent, deep and earthy Pinot Nero that is unlike anything else - wild and evocative with tart red forest fruits, allspice and damp forest floor. Kante is also a poet and painter with one of his stunning works depicted on this label (as well as his other Selezione or top tier special selection labels. Pair with local specialties like frico, San Daniele prosciutto, roast game birds or a crisp autumn evening with friends.
