More about Bedrock Wine Co:

Bedrock Wine Co.'s co-founder Chris Cottrell needs little introduction these days, but we'll give him one.

Bedrock was founded in 2007 by Chris' partner and best friend, Morgan-Twain Peterson; after a few harvests, in 2011, Morgan successfully convinced Chris to ditch his fast-paced life in New York City wine retail to become his partner in the burgeoning Sonoma venture (and its offshoot, Under the Wire, dedicated to sparkling wines).

Over the past 15 years, our shop has been a loyal supporter of Bedrock Wine Co.'s mission and wines (in fact, Lo worked a harvest there in 2024) made from some of California's most special, heritage vineyards.

We've been overjoyed (though not surprised) to see Bedrock receive much warranted acclaim and attention: they were named Vinous' Winery of the Year in 2020, have earned multiple 100 point scores from Robert Parker, and have become an emblem of The New California Wine movement.

Despite much reason for one, these guys have no ego. Chris has always been super grateful for his fans in the Wine on Piedmont community, never hesitates to make the trip down and pour at our bar (or do a shelter in place virtual tasting) vintage after vintage.

Old Vines, Better Wine?

While most California vineyards are replanted every 20-30 years to maximize productivity, Morgan and Chris seek out the anomalies: old, gnarled, 100+ year old vines from sites like Evanghelo vineyard in Contra Costa County, where the vine roots of run some 40 feet deep, or Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma County, where the world's oldest (or second oldest) Semillon Vines cling to the volcanic mountain side. The yields are low, but the quality is incredible--with age the wines become more concentrated and the wines find a natural balance, even in challenging vintages.

Chris and Morgan firmly believe that, in order to make great wines, they also need to be involved in farming the vines, so  their team owns or farms many of the vineyards from which they source. Over the past few years, they have been converting some of these vineyards into certified Regenerative Vineyards, improving soil health, capturing more carbon from the atmosphere and, ultimately, making better wines (Chris has already noticed a marked improvement in tannin structure).

Let's nerd out about regenerative farming, and much much more, on Friday July 10th!
