Coming from one of Germany's warmer vintages and warmer regions, von Winning’s 2020 Ungeheuer GG offers tropical fruit (papaya, passionfruit) and stone fruit (white peach) along with the citrus tang and mineral zing that we associate with German Riesling. These flavors are complemented by mint, moss and a hint of oak on the lightly caramel-tinged finish. You may also notice a hint of reduction (a subtle note of struck match familiar to fans of white Burgundy) to some of the von Winning wines. This wine is frightening drinkable today, though will continue to develop for over a decade.
The term Grosses Gewächs is the German equivalent of the French Grand Cru. To qualify for GG status, a wine must a) be dry b) come from a designated Grosses Lage (‘great site’) c) adhere to strict yield, quality and production protocols and d) be made by a producer member of the VDP or Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, an exclusive club made up of many of Germany’s best producers.
