Domaine Magdalena is the passion project of Maggie Hedges and her husband Christophe Hedges. In lieu of taking a honeymoon, they decided to buy property on Red Mountain in eastern Washington, and planted 4 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. Christophe Hedges grew up in and around his parents' winery, Hedges Family Estate, which they founded in the mid-1980s. Christophe's sister Sarah also grew up in the family business, and today she is the head winemaker not just for Hedges but also collaborates with Maggie to make Domaine Magdalena. They take a very traditionalist approach here, with only neutral oak and a rather short time in barrel, just 7 months. What do we mean by neutral oak? This means that the wine is kept in oak barriques that have already been used for 3 vintages or more, and aren't contributing toasty or spicy aromas like a first or second-use cask. This property is also certified biodynamic, an expensive and difficult proposition.
