Hand-harvested in small crates from 30 year old vines Cinsault, 13 year old Grenache Noir and 12 year old Syrah. Low yields of just 35hL/ha. The color is pale pink with lychee reflections. The nose is very expressive with intense perfume of red fruit; blackcurrant, strawberry, and raspberry. The palate is fresh and round, where one finds the fruit flavors, with a nice balance and a long finish, delicate and ethereal, always on the fruit. When Jerome Esteve and his wife arrived at this domaine in 2002, they had been searching to find parcels of very old vines Carignan. Chateau Montfin is an entirely old vines estate with vines dating back to 1930! The total production is very small for the relatively tiny (by Corbières standards) estate of 20 hectares, with the average yields being just 25-35 Hl/Ha. Since 2009 the domaine has organically farmed all their parcels of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault (60+ year old vines) and now the entire domaine is certified organic. They also even practice some biodynamics such as spraying an infusion of nettle and comfrey on the vines, placing green manure on the vines in order to add organic material and humidity, and planting various type of trees around the vines to recreate a kind of equilibrium in the ecosystem. All the varieties of trees are completely adapted to Mediterranean climate. Their 3 donkeys (Laouset and his 2 daughters Bahia and Aglae) from the Pyrènees are most helpful during winter to pre-prune the vines, eat the grass and even add a little natural fertilizer to the terroir. Seeking ourselves a Corbières apart from the standard, we recently found in Chateau Montfin the value of a Corbières but with the concentration and depth of a much higher pedigree wine.
