His vineyards are on the Carso, the limestone plateau running between Trieste and Slovenia. While he focuses on whites (what the region is known for), when conditions permit, he produces a tiny amount of Pinot Nero from high elevation vineyards (900) planted to pure karst (limestone). The wine is aged for 3 years in French oak (10% new) followed by 2 years in bottle prior to release, yielding a transcendent, deep and earthy Pinot Nero that is unlike anything else - wild and evocative with tart red forest fruits, allspice and damp forest floor.
