In keeping with our Friday's theme, we will be showcasing the new direction that many local producers are going in terms of style. In the 80's, American winemaking took a turn towards the sun. Restraint and elegance made way for bold and very ripe flavors. Ours was a culture of 'big', from our cars to our hair, all the way down to our drinks. Big fruit and bold oak notes flooded the wine market, giving Californian wine the sweet reputation it still has to this day. Fast forward a few decades and now the pendulum is a'swinging, headed back to the old-world style of the past. Jam and toast are moving out of the way, while fresh fruit and crushed rocks are holding their spots. For some winemakers, the trend is now to make wines with higher acidity levels, more restraint in term of oak, and overall more food-friendliness. Do not worry, big impressiveness still holds true to our California characteristic.
