Weekend Wine Tasting 'German and Austrian Patio Wines'
6/24/2017 9:00:00 PM UTC - 6/26/2017 12:00:00 AM UTC
Posted By: Wine on Piedmont
Too many wine drinkers have dismissed German wines for being 'too sweet' and have completely overlooked the wines of Austria. Well, these are oversights that simply must be corrected. In order to help the process of education and rehabilitation, we are offering for tasting a range of both familiar and unusual grape varieties from these two middle European neighbors.
These wines will introduce you to (or remind you of) the diversity and excellence that are possible in these countries. What they all share is purity of flavor, crispness on the finish and a refreshing quality that is ideal for summer quaffing and pairing with lighter cuisine.
Don't miss this chance to learn about and taste some of the best whites and lighter-bodied reds around see why they are perfect choices for sipping on the patio as well as outdoor dining and entertaining.

Friday Nite Tasting Spectacular Summer Rosés
6/24/2017 12:00:00 AM UTC - 6/24/2017 2:00:00 AM UTC
Posted By: Wine on Piedmont
Nothing says summer like a chilled crisp rosé, so in order to get the summer off to the best possible start, we are featuring five of the very best rosés made. There is nothing more refreshing on a hot afternoon or a balmy evening than  well-chilled rose. And few wines are more versatile, matching with everything from shellfish to grilled steak. But rosés are hardly monolithic, there is a broad range of styles from a broad assortment of grape varieties and from nearly every part of the winemaking world.
Don't worry about how you are perceived while drinking wine with a pink hue. To quote Charles Smith, "Yes, you can drink pink wine and still be Bad-Ass"
This Friday evening we will showcase the quality that unites these great rosés and the qualities that differentiate them. So get your Bad-Ass self in here start your summer in fine pink fashion.

Weekend Wine Tasting 'Something Special for Dad'
6/17/2017 9:00:00 PM UTC - 6/19/2017 12:00:00 AM UTC
Posted By: Wine on Piedmont
The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. However, it was not until 1972–58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official–that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the United States.
We have always been slow to acknowledge the contributions of fathers even though we know how important they are. This year, do something special for your dad. Not just another tie, but a really great bottle of scotch or a special bottle of fine wine. Or make his favorite meal and open a really nice bottle to accompany it.

This weekend, we are presenting a special tasting with dads in mind. We have selected some of our favorites, wines that will go nicely with whatever you are planning for Father's Day.
So come in this weekend and taste the wines so that you can select the perfect gift for dad or the perfect wine to pair with a special Father's Day feast. Better yet, bring your dad with you, treat him to a tasting, and let him chose his favorite.

The first vintage release was as Failla-Jordan in 1998; the label taking its name from winemaker Ehren Jordan and Anne-Marie Failla.  The wines are made by Ehren Jordan, for 18 years the winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars, best known for their bodacious yet beautiful Zinfandels. Jordan was also a partner and winemaker at Neyers Vineyards, but has been slowly building up his own winery
Failla, in contrast with Turley, is a wine about finesse and grace. While the winemaking happens in Napa, the Estate Vineyard is on the Sonoma Coast, in the relatively newly approved Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. It's an area Jordan grew intrigued by when working for Helen Turley at Marcassin back in 1994. Failla farms organically - and water comes from natural springs run through solar powered drip systems. Other people growing in this AVA are Flowers, Hirsch, and Martinelli, so Jordan is onto something--and that's wonderful expressions of Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir.

Day is the new Zinfandel project of Ehren Jordan, a return to one of his early loves in the vine world - Zinfandel. Great sites, old vines, and gentle winemaking remain the production philosophy for Day.  Ehren is more than thrilled to work with some of California's finest Zinfandel vineyards;

Weekend Wine Tasting 'Bella Italia'
6/3/2017 9:00:00 PM UTC - 6/5/2017 12:00:00 AM UTC

Beauty is everywhere, especially in Italy. From the steep hills of Piedmont to the sandy banks of Napoli. What is especially attractive from this Mediterranean mecca is the broad spectrum of flavors that exist in their wines. From the crisp, saline tinged minerality from varietals like Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc, to the tart, spicy and herbaceousness of Sangiovese. This weekend we are giving you a glimpse of some of the most appealing wines of late from our beloved bella Italia. We start off with an impressively rich yet grippingly citrusy Vermentino from Mancini and an interesting blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Friulano, and Pinot Grigio from the family-owned estate of Zuani. To end the line-up we are presenting a classic beauty from Tuscany and a rich, and subtly earthy next-door sweetheart Teroldego from the Trentino biodynamic vineyards of Elisabetta Foradori. This is truly beauty in a bottle.   2016 Piero Mancini

6/3/2017 12:00:00 AM UTC - 6/3/2017 2:00:00 AM UTC
Posted By: Wine on Piedmont
What better way to start the weekend, than with Champagne? And not just any bubbly wine, but Grower Champagne. For those unfamiliar with the term, Grower Champagnes differ from their mass-produced counterparts in a very important way. Because these houses control the entire process from vineyard to bottle, they can insure quality in a way the giants can not. The focus in the vineyard is on quality rather than maximum yield. The harvesting, riddling, aging, bottling, and often even labelling are done by hand, usually by someone whose name is on the label.
The resulting wines are creamier, more complex and elegant and have greater depth of flavor than the wines produced by more well-known corporate labels.
Come taste the difference that this care and craftsmanship make and see for yourself why more and more wine lovers are leaving the name brands and falling in love with Grower Champagnes.

When seeking wines that over deliver, sometimes setting our sights on a far away vantage point is the way to go. Much like finding designer jeans at a garage sale, sometimes we find age-worthy, beautifully balanced wines for pennies on the dollar. That is exactly what we intend to share with you this Saturday and Sunday. This weekend’s line up showcases exceptionally made wines from esteemed producers that are also surprisingly soft on the pocketbook. We bring you Spain, in its most affordable glory, a treasure chest of classic flavors that are both mouthwatering and food-friendly. Azienda Vinicola Malaspina is located on the furthest tip of Calabria, a proud, wild and fascinating region. Calabria is a region of a thousand faces, its hills descend to the sea happily providing its scents and flavors.  It is in this context that the vineyards of Malaspina are located. The winery began in 1967, when Consolato Malaspina’ s interest in wine-making became a passion and, subsequently, his future. Since then he has been dedicating his life to produce  quality wines.Consolato has been able to transmit his love for the land and the wine world to his four daughters, Domenica, Caterina, Irene and Patrizia, who are committed to continue the hundreds-of-years-old traditions that are a part and parcel of Calabria.

I think the winery says it best: "Winemaking for us is a natural extension of farming, and most of our grapes come from the seven vineyards that we farm in Napa and Sonoma. In all cases we try to respect the purity of the variety and the individuality of the site. Our wines are refreshing, complement food, and are moderate in alcohol. By using our site-specific farming methods to grow intense fruit, coupled with careful restraint in the cellar, we strive to produce wine that is full flavored but impeccably balanced.   2016 Rosé

The Germans are coming...thank goodness...and with them solar power, sturdy cars and damn good wines. For decades, we have come to equate Germany with sweet, sticky, and quaffable wines that our mother-in-laws crave. Nowadays, thanks to importers like Rudi Wiest Selections, we have come to expect our German swill to be low alcohol, food-friendly, dry and mouthwateringly complex. Varietals like Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir are no longer antonymous with the Rhineland. They are on par with their Riesling brethren, in terms of quality and class. So join us this Friday as we welcome some of the best of the best that Germany has to offer. Oh and, you might just want to bring your mother-in-laws...for good measure.

There is nothing better than happening upon a song that once served as the zeitgeist of the past--something that reminds us of the good ol times. Even when it comes to wine, we are submerged in the modern these days. While wines that detour from the paths that put the US on the winemaking map are exciting new takes on enology, there is something to be said about a simply well made classic. Chardonnay and its beautiful roundness, the leather-tinged fruitiness of Cabernet Sauvignon, and the smoke-kissed, cherry cola quality of Pinot Noir, are all examples of delicious and nostalgic flavors that take a good many of us to our happy places. It’s all about balance. This weekend we are proving that classic American style can still be 'a la mode'.

We as humans crave change. We get bored with things that do not continue to impress. The latest movie, the cool neighborhood restaurant, the trendy electric car, all of these things are all attractive for one reason…they are new to us. The same can be said with the interesting and esoteric wines that are populating our shelves these days. Wines like skin-fermented Semillon and carbonic-macerated Mission, to list just a few, are increasingly more sought after and coveted. These new kids on the block are fun, refreshing and intriguing new conversation pieces at our dinner parties. They eschew the winemaking techniques of the older generations, making way for new flavors and new discoveries. This Friday we are showing off our shiny new scores, and we encourage you to come on board the bandwagon.

Weekend Wine Tasting 'Stone Soup: California Rhones'

A rolling stone collects no moss but gathers a certain polish, said Oliver Herford. The same can be said for the beautifully complex varietals that are grown on the stony banks of the Rhone Valley. These often underrepresented grapes have, for centuries inspired folks--from the papacy to poets--yet have only recently gained momentum on Californian soil. Why is that you ask, well to quote the infamous Randal Graham in his interview with wineanorak.com  “in the new world we are making it up as we go along, and there are more ways to stuff it up than get it right.” In honor of you lord Rhone Ranger, we seem to be “getting it right” more often than naught these days. This weekend’s line-up is an example of just that: elegance, nuance, and complexity all made from the Rhone’s finest offspring. Like the old story goes, we have managed to create a feast out of what began as stone soup.   2016 Sans Liege

Bigger is better, at least in terms of this Friday’s line-up, and we promise these claims are not just our inflated opinions. There is something special that happens when wine ages, it develops flavor and character through microscopic amounts of oxygen seeping in through cork, oak and even non-cork closures. Winemakers bank on it. Yet, sometimes it is the freshness and youthfulness that we seek. As such, we are showing how to find the “fountain of youth” in your favorite wine…buy it in magnums! Because the amount of “unexposed” wine far outnumbers the amount of “exposed” wine in larger format bottles, you can hold these treasures for even longer than their 750ml counterparts. So if you are a collector, self-controlled, or simply like a showy display of your wine savvy, you will not want to miss this educational walk-through of our favorite “biggies”. ‘Bizzarro popolo gli italiani’ claims Winston Churchill, or in other words, Italians are bizarre! They certainly can be, my good man Win, and so are their wines. Let us try to keep in mind that different does not always mean less than delicious. Different just means different. We are here to show how many of these relatively unknown varietals and blends can truly shine when given their chance at centerstage. Grapes like the crisp, citrusy Inzolia or deep, perfumed Lacrima di Morro d'Alba can be beautiful pairings to some of the most varied of plates. Also the elegant chocolate and persimmon-like Refosco can enhance even the dullest of dinners when given the opportunity. Ridge Winery was established in 1959 by a band of Stanford Engineers and put on the map by one of our generation’s most esteemed wine makers, Paul Drapier. It has been claimed to be one of California’s oldest and best producers of wine by a number of respected critics (James Laube, Eric Asimov…to name just a few). From winning 5th place during the Judgement of Paris in 1976, then first place in the 30th anniversary of this unforgettable tasting, Ridge has garnered a spot as one of the most coveted, age-worthy and allocated wineries of our time. It is no wonder, these wines are almost never available to purchase in retail shops, let alone opened for customers to taste. However, due to our strong relationships and some crafty schmoozing, we are offering this Friday a glimpse and a taste of this unicorn-winery’s newest releases. 4/8/2017 9:00:00 PM UTC - 4/10/2017 12:00:00 AM UTC
Posted By: Wine on Piedmont
In keeping with our Friday's theme, we will be showcasing the new direction that many local producers are going in terms of style. In the 80's, American winemaking took a turn towards the sun. Restraint and elegance made way for bold and very ripe flavors. Ours was a culture of 'big', from our cars to our hair, all the way down to our drinks. Big fruit and bold oak notes flooded the wine market, giving Californian wine the sweet reputation it still has to this day. Fast forward a few decades and now the pendulum is a'swinging, headed back to the old-world style of the past. Jam and toast are moving out of the way, while fresh fruit and crushed rocks are holding their spots. For some winemakers, the trend is now to make wines with higher acidity levels, more restraint in term of oak, and overall more food-friendliness. Do not worry, big impressiveness still holds true to our California characteristic.

Bret is the co-founder and winemaker of the new-kid-on-the-block winery, Cote West. Growing up in Carmel Valley he developed an early appreciation for the natural beauty of the California landscape. He received a Masters degree in Viticulture & Enology from UC Davis and got his hands dirty interning at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in Napa and Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault Burgundy. Upon returning from France, he set out to combine that tradition-steeped approach with his training at Davis in order to create Old World-style yet undeniably Californian wines. Bret adheres to all of the same techniques he learned abroad, from skin-contact to cooperage. The only differentiating factor: the grapes themselves, all of which are sourced from esteemed Californian vineyards.     What wine with no appellation is being considered by experts and wine connaisseurs as «The only Grand Cru of the Midi» (Hugh Johnson), «A Lafite in Languedoc» (Gault & Millau); « One of the 10 best wines in the world» (Michael Broadbent) or simply «Exceptional» (Robert Parker)?
Within 40 years the Mas de Daumas Gassac wines have reached the rare status of «cult wine» that is only given to a limited number of exceptional estates in the world.
We are thrilled to be able to share these wines with you and to have them presented by Samuel, whose family-owned winery is producing some of the most exciting wines on all of France.

What is 'terroir' and how can it be exemplified in wine? There is nothing more suitable an example of terroir, than the earthy, stony, and rocky representations from Fance. Hailed as the inventors of the term, 'Les Francais' are some of the best at capturing the flavors of the soil in their bottles. This weekend, we will be featuring an elegant selection of earthiness from the Loire, Beaujolais and Bordeaux. Each of these regions are known for their mineral-driven soils and for the bright, exceptionally food-worth wines that are made from them.  From the gravelly banks of Entre-Deux-Mers to the sea-bed stones of Morgon, this line-up will truly make your tastebuds water. Despite the old idiom to 'never put rocks in your mouth', we believe that on this weekend, you are exempt.   2015 Chateau Sainte-Marie

In 1992, Diamond Wine Importers was created out of the belief that Greece, with its natural terroir of mountain vineyards, maritime influenced climate, volcanic and alluvial soils, and over 200 ancient indigenous varieties, can once again become a source of some of the greatest wines in the world. Over the last 20 years of tasting and traveling throughout Greece, they have compiled a portfolio of the best artisan, vineyard-driven producers who are working with the best native varietals from the best appellations. It is our pleasure at Wine on Piedmont to offer a broad example of Greek wine-making at its finest with the following line-up.

Weekend Wine Tasting 'Climate Change, the Italian Way'
3/25/2017 9:00:00 PM UTC - 3/27/2017 12:00:00 AM UTC
Posted By: Wine on Piedmont
Climate change is real...at least as it applies to Italian wine growing regions. This week, our line-up more than exemplifies what we mean. Nothing is more vast than the multitude of micro-climates among the Italian viticultural areas. From the frigid, Alpine peaks to the sun-kissed sands of the South, Italy's wine regions are some of the best to study when it comes to how temps and terroir affect what goes into bottle. Come in this weekend for a glimpse of just this. We will examine, in our most scientific and swirly way, what exactly the warm sun does to otherwise high-acid, white varietals, and what a drop in temp can mean for otherwise bold and brawny reds. We promise to make believers out of you yet.   2015 Corte di Giso

Friday Nite Tasting 'Tessier Winery' featuring Kristie Tacey
3/25/2017 12:00:00 AM UTC - 3/25/2017 2:00:00 AM UTC
Posted By: Wine on Piedmont
Created in 2009, Tessier is a micro winery handcrafting small lots of Pinot Noir, Grenache, Cabernet Franc and Viognier. For winemaker Kristie Tacey, sustainability is a priority, not only in choosing vineyards that incorporate such farming practices, but in the footprint the winery leaves in the community and in interactions with others. Her strong relationship with growers in Russian River Valley, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and El Dorado results in high quality fruit, and her minimal winemaking approach allows the grapes and vineyards to speak for themselves. Annual production, though expanded since the inaugural vintage, is still only 600 cases, which allows for unparalleled attention to each wine.

Californian wines need not be synonymous with mass produced, jug juice. We are surrounded by diversity in climate, geography and style in our beloved golden state. Our wines should be a direct representation of this diversity. Thus, the celebration of this weekend's line-up, a selection of classic varietals made with a 'not-so-classic', Californian approach. Come experience the uber-small production wines that showcase some of California's beautifully unique and often underrepresented regions. The Drusian family has been producing wine for three generations and owns 80 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Valdobbiadene. Mr. Francesco Drusian’s thought is to consider the quality of his wine as the pure expression of the grapes. Hand harvested and very gently vinified, great care is taken to preserve the structure and delicateness of his fruit. His company's ethos is based not only on their love and respect for the work, the environment and the land, but also on the consensus of like-mined wine lovers that what is in the bottle is truly worth all of the effort it took to get there.

After working many years in the retail and distribution sides of the business in New York, London, and San Francisco, Oliver McCrum began importing and distributing wines on his own in 1994. The portfolio had been Italian focused for many years but in 2007, he decided to focus exclusively on the importation of Italian wines. Since then the portfolio has expanded from a predominantly Northern Italian selection to include an equally powerful and fast-growing Southern Italian selection. Oliver and his team look for wines with clarity, focus, and precision made from indigenous Italian grape varieties using traditional winemaking techniques and no obvious use of oak.

As importers, Vintage 59 looks for wines with depth of fruit, length and elegance, rather than for obtrusive oak, over-extraction, or excessive alcohol. The company focuses on the rich relationships that spring from the community of growers, instead of just the commercial imperative. They believe in working with people who share sensibilities, and that makes them as important as the wine they produce.

Terry Theise has been a wine importer and writer for thirty years. His first love is German Riesling which was once a staple at the finest tables in America, but had been largely forgotten when Terry began working with a group of small German growers in 1985. Twenty years ago he discovered vastly underappreciated and underrepresented Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, St. Laurent, Blaufränkisch (and even more obscure varieties) from top growers in Austria.

Mendocino County’s authentic “green” credentials are unsurpassed by any other wine region in the world. The majority of the region's 570 vineyards remain in the hands of family farmers, many of whom have lived for two or more generations on their land-some tracing their roots to the first settlers in the 1850's.  Mendocino County encompasses a total area of 2.4 million acres, of which 18,800 acres have been planted to grapevines.

At Small Vineyards, we search every corner of the Mediterranean for the best small production wines being made today. Why? Because we believe-after tasting thousands of wines-that the very best consistently come from small estates. If you think about it, it’s a lot easier to make a great meal for 5 people than for 500, and winemaking is no different. That is why we tell our clients up front-with our Small Vineyards gold seal on the bottle-that you’re holding a small batch wine from a family-owned estate, that you will be proud to serve. In working with small, family-owned estates we are not just ensuring that the wine is fantastic, but we are working to protect a way of life that has been preserved through generations.

Located in the Mendocino appellation of Yorkville Highlands, Halcón Vineyards overlook Anderson Valley – and the Pacific beyond. At 2500ft it is one of the highest vineyards in California. The northerly location, ocean exposure, and altitude combine to produce a climate remarkably similar to the Northern Rhône region of France. Above the fog line, the nighttime and early morning temperatures are warmer than the valley below. Conversely, the altitude and regular afternoon breezes moderate the peak temperatures. This smaller diurnal swing provides longer, slower ripening, and increased complexity.

These are some of the most exciting wines we've tried recently, combining depth and finesse in a way few California wines achieve. Don't miss this chance to join Paul to taste through his latest releases.

Betwixt Wines are makers of intriguing wines produced in small lots in San Francisco.  Our goal is to create authentic wines that are defined by nature, not humans.  By leaving behind preconceptions about what great wines are, we free ourselves to create wines that are truly expressive of time and place. Minimalist winemaking techniques are central to our overall approach. Winemaker Tim Telli does as little as possible to the grapes and allows native fermentations to take place after cold soaking periods of up to a week.  Wines are gently pressed and then left in barrel with no racking until bottling. Betwixt wines are always unfined and unfiltered.

Ehlers Estate WInery is a unique winery. For one, it is the only non-profit winery in California. All of its profits go to cardiovascular research. Secondly, the winery is very old, having been established in 1886 by Bernard Ehlers. Additionally, the vineyards are biodynamically farmed. Today, the winery is producing some of the most excitiong wines to come out of the Napa Valley. Join Brad Friday the 29th from 5 to 7pm as he leads a tasting of the winery's current releases. This is not to be missed.

Following the heavy damage suffered as a result of the flooding that occurred throughout West Virginia (specially in the Greenbrier County) at the end of June, The Greenbrier resort is doing its part to help its neighbors who have lost so much because of the waters.
The Greenbrier’s Neighbors Loving Neighbors campaign is collecting both food and cash to help the flood’s victims get back on their feet and Wine on Piedmont is hosting a fantastic wine tasting this Friday to help with the efforts. All profits from the tasting fee will be donated to the campain.
Due in part to the generosity of our suppliers, we will be able to offer a stellar lineup of wines.
So please join us on Friday Nite and wish Robert Bon Voyage!

Jeff Cohn's history of making stellar wines dates back to Rosenblum Cellars and continues with his own winery where he focuses on wines with a heavy Rhône influence. Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Petite Sirah are among the varieties he uses to craft distinctive blends. Jeff also has single varietal wines from Syrah, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes as part of his portfolio. Friday night, Jeff will share some favorites from among his current releases. As a group, these wines may well be the best wines Jeff has made in his prolific career.
